Description

“I created these works while living on an island near St. Augustine, FL. St. Augustine has an unbelievably rich amount of Black history & culture, as it is ‘America’s oldest city’ and was the site of the first free Black settlement. There’s an amazing documentary called, ‘Dare Not Walk Alone’ about the civil rights movement & how St. Augustine played a part in huge events that are not at all widely taught. It is a proven fact that Africans were some of the first explorers in what is now known as Florida & they had a heavy hand in establishing St. Augustine. However, the United States refuses to properly acknowledge the history found there, or even fund museums or upkeep of monumental spots related to Black culture & history. Instead, it’s where the efforts of Black people seemingly go to die. Zora Neale Hurston lived in St. Augustine, and I stood in front of the home she once blessed with her presence & nearly cried because the home is in a total state of disarray. I went to the Lincolnville Museum & Culture center, housed in a building that was once the first Black public high school, and saw that it was being run entirely by volunteers & funded by donations. They have some of the most poignant exhibitions on Black history that I’ve ever seen in my life, yet they could barely afford to keep the lights on. While living there, I experienced a devastating depression that can only be described as ancestral grief. I was standing on land built by Black hands; as is most all land in America-but it had never been as concrete of an experience for me as it was while living in St. Augustine. These were the only works I was able to create during my entire time there. All I could think when I wasn’t being sad was, I really hope freedom ain’t this fickle in the future.” -B.N.
